Careful What You Wish For

Writer_smallerKeep on playin’ games

Firstly, for those who care about such things (and I believe our audience numbers a few of you) there is another great value word game on KS right now. This one seems to have an extraordinarily simple rule set, so much so that I was put off a little at first, but it’s possible it is one of those games that works well, not in spite of, but because of, a simple rule set. At only 23 dollars including shipping, it’s quite likely I will find out. And the KS is still live as this comic is posted.

Halloween came and went with little in the way of opportunity for playing seasonal games. We did manage a solitary game of Werewolf (I won, and must say the villagers were delightfully tasty), but Mysterium, or Ghost Stories, or Dead of Winter all failed to haunt our gaming group with their presence.

Still, if Disney movies have taught me anything, it’s that Halloween was, and still is, in our hearts all along, and so can be celebrated right up to Christmas, at which point the carved pumpkins are likely to be no more than orange mushy puddles by your doorstep, and should be removed. The point being, spooky games are good all year round, so we shall try our best to get some in at a later date. In fact, we have been meaning to get back to Fiasco, and there are plenty of appropriately themed scenarios for a night of horror gaming. Our first game was an ordinary crime-themed bloodbath, so now we want to try a bloodbath of a more supernatural nature – zombies, monsters, politicians, accountants etc.

I have an X-Wing tournament this weekend, but after that there is no more competitive X-Wing (at least locally) until the new year, so I will be playing a broader spectrum of games in general. Having said that, it is also looking more and more likely that GW’s Blood Bowl will release this month, which means I will just be swapping an X-Wing obsession for a Blood Bowl obsession … Anyone else as excited about Blood Bowl as I am? (on a scale of 1 to pretty darn excited I would rate myself as being ‘pretty darn excited’)

Spooky Halloween Special

Writer_smallerWe had a great pick up in site views last week, thanks to a mention from Stonemaier games on the Scythe Kickstarter page, and some love from the Geekdad website too. Thanks guys! And if you’re new to the site, welcome aboard! Do say hello in the comments below, after I’m doing jumping semi-coherently from one topic to the next.

Many, many years ago, I used to love a show called 2 Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place. What should have been a standard, run-rate sitcom was elevated by several factors: its goofy, oddball sense of humour, Ryan Reynolds in a leading role, and also Nathan Fillion’s first major TV appearance. But other than being hilarious and seeding some serious man-crushes, every year for Halloween it threw the sitcom template out the window and did crazy specials that involved axe-murdering doppelgängers, mad scientists and body swaps. The very next week things would return to normal, and no-one would ever mention the laboratory they found in the basement or the body count. I loved those Halloween specials, and want to make it a Tiny Wooden Pieces tradition. To have a little fun and maybe even indulge in a little axe-murdering. ‘Tis the season, after all.

We also did a horror-themed comic last year, based on Arkham Horror. It’s a two-parter, and It starts here, and you can find our Elder Sign comic here. And if you’re the kind of monster whose lust for blood and terror isn’t satiated by all those comics, we also covered Dead of Winter here and here.

Arkham (oh the) Horror: Part II of II

Writer_smallerHappy Halloween!

Part one of the comic can be found here. Or by pressing the back button underneath the comic. The choice is yours. It’s like a really, really poor “Choose your own Adventure” book where there is only one choice and it leads to the same page anyway.

I guess it’s kind of like a regular book then?

Arkham (oh the) Horror: Part I of II

Writer_smallerHalloween Special

We are trying something a little different this week: the comic is part one of a two-parter Halloween special. We hope you like it? In fact, do let us know whether or not you like the idea of an occasional multi-part story. While one-off comics will continue to make up the bulk of our posts, if feedback on this is good we might mix it up a little. We are still only a young comic, particularly in web terms, and so want to try new things, stretch our creative limbs to find our limits, and indeed, our most comfortable spots on the creative couch.

In fact, any and all feedback is welcome and gratefully received. More of a particular type of comic, a game you would love to see featured. Like the proverbial genie (only less blue and 50% less bearded) your wish is our command. Unless you wish for more wishes. Nobody likes a smartass.
